eyes open

  • The Snow Patrol show last night was AMAZING! I hadn't seen them live before and I was totally won over! I just wish I had more time this morning to rave about it because it was truly worthy of praise! Be sure to check them out when they return in June! (Thanks again Kat!)
  • Oh and I met Badly Drawn Blog at the show! So cute!
  • My RockMom and Dad said the Ray Davies show was great - a good mix of the new material with the classics... And RockMom also noted how great he looks for 62!
  • Blur are making a dirty, nasty, filthy new album. Which sounds quite good to me.
  • The Replacements have reunited and are recording new music! Yay!
  • It's just a quick post today because I'm taking my friend Robbie, the birthday girl, to lunch and some civility before her white trash themed birthday party tonight!
  • Go to the Art Brut show at the Horseshow Tavern tomorrow night! If it's anything like their last show your mind will be blown!

    untitled

  • NME's official SXSW podcast.
  • You Aint No Picasso has a link to the new, weird video for The Flaming Lips new single “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song”.
  • Some Pitchfork news only a devoted Interpol fan would care about. (Not me.)
  • "Arctic Monkey dodges death on Texas highway!" Hahahaha!
  • Good news for people who hate Embrace... Frontman Danny McNamara has serious heart problems and predicts an early death. :(
  • Graham Coxon's still bitching about how much it sucked being in Blur.
  • Morrissey's at it again... Interestingly, he blames Kate Moss for the downfall of Pete Doherty by putting him in the spotlight.
  • Ray Davies is playing a show at Massey Hall tonight...
  • ... and I'm going to Snow Patrol's sold-out show at The Opera House tonight! Thank you Kat!
  • Google Idol. My vote goes to the "Respect" girls. (Thanks Mark!)

    i've been humped!

Check out my Hump Day Picks over at my lovely new friend Jax's site, Rock Insider.

This is equivalent to the coolest girl in school inviting you for a sleepover...

but, like, in the blog world.

    still mad

  • It's a bit of a dull morning after all of yesterday's drama...
  • Embrace have been chosen to write and record England's official World Cup song. I can't see any song they've written inspiring football hooliganism (which I personally enjoy).
  • The new Razorlight album "sounds like a classic" say the band. Of course they're going to say that!
  • Jack White digs Arctic Monkeys. Gosh, he's so groundbreaking ;)
  • I'm actually very pleased with Quanah Humphreys of Pitchfork's spin on Morrissey's statement. Since he's being so righteous he should immediately pull his forthcoming British (um, fox-hunting anyone?) and American (uh hello, War on Iraq) tours.
  • My Death Space. So disturbing. Should anything ever happen to me please don't let them featue me on this sick website.
  • Vancouver knows how to fight/party. Flash-mob, pillow-fight stylez.
  • Toronto's got a Subway Party happening tonight. The theme is Dr. Suess.
  • My boy sent me links to these funny little flash animations about the Mens and Ladies Restrooms. Funny because it's true.

time for heroes (cos i just lost mine)

This Morrissey VS Canada drama is still infuriating me. I've considered myself a dedicated Morrissey fan for years but for him to disrespect his Canadian fans like this appalls me. Why punish us for something we have no control over? Many of his fans are animal activists (like myself) and others may support the seal hunt (sometimes I also fall under this category too) for logical reasons - but NO ONE wants to see innocent animals killed. All in all, it is a terrible predicament and no joy comes from it. Especially not now.

While I respect his right to state his position, his chosen course of action will only hurts his fans.

I for one think he's being incredibly unfair and ignorant... And I will not buying his new album because of it.

Oh and, like, Pete Doherty would totally never pull this shit. And he's Pete Doherty.

    morrissey 's war against canada

Morrissey has announced he will not be bringing his tour to Canada - in protest against the seal hunt.

What the fuck? The Morrissey fans aren't the one's responsible for the seal cull!!!

Morrissey, I will protest your stupid protest by not buying your shitty new CD.
I love you but this is fucking retarded.

    the car's already crashed

  • Stellastarr* and The Editors put on a solid show Friday! Dare I say I enjoyed it more than Arctic Monkeys show at the same venue a few days earlier! Stellastarr* put on such an energetic show that it was hard act for The Editors to follow! And I must add that it was fab to see Alana and Rebecca dancing onstage for "My Coco"! Atta girls!
  • Rolling Stone's article "Over The Edge with Pete Doherty." I think it's very good.
  • Thank the lord for Dirty Pretty Things!
  • Art Brut have inked an American record deal and will get a US release in May. Hurrah!
  • Andrew Kendall has finally posted some pictures of Morrissey's performance at the Austin Music Hall (March 16th).
  • I love all the ridiculous new Gnarls Barkley promo pics. See here, here, here, and here.
  • Arctic Monkeys are headed Down Under.
  • The Guardian writes on Julien Temple's "epic" new film about the Glastonbury festival.
  • Pictures that apparently prove Kate'n'Pete are still an item!
  • I saw V for Vendetta on IMAX this weekend and really enjoyed it. Verdict? Very enjoyable in spite of my initial protests (sorry babe).
  • Someone finally YouTube'd Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) performing "Help the (Muthafuckin) Aged" on the Ali G Show many years ago. Brilliant.
  • BWAHAHAH! Widespread CRACK use in Alabama = "Leprechaun in Alabama" news feature!
  • Friday, March 24, 2006

    taking an early weekend

  • Sorry but I have no time to post today. I got things to do.
  • I'm listed on the About Top40/Pop blogroll. I love that my site is described as "An essential guide to the most interesting, if not always the most important current news stories on rock music."
  • I'm going to see Stellastarr* and The Editors tonight at the Phoenix. Maybe I'll see you there. Have a great weekend!

    britpop nostalgia day

  • Happy Birthday to the still oh-so-very-sexy Damon Albarn.
  • Pete Doherty admitted guilt to seven counts of drug posession in court this morning.
  • Mike Skinner (The Streets) feels bad for stealing a giant stuffed tiger in Germany.
  • Stream Morrissey's new album 'Ringleader Of The Tormentors' on MySpace.
  • Download Dirty Pretty Things' "You Fucking Love It" over at Stereogum.
  • Oh Cerys Matthews I still love you after all those years. So thrilled she's back. Remember when she looked like this? Sigh.
  • The Hype Machine, an MP3 aggregator (that Thierry introduced me to last night), is awesome. It helped me rediscover one of my favourite teen angst songs - appropriately titled "Teenage Angst" by Placebo.
  • The Smiths/Morrissey Fest! In Toronto! This Saturday Night! Why am I not going to this?
  • Sugababes cover Arctic Monkeys AND Hard-Fi!!!
  • The Sun calls Toronto "sleepy Canadian city". The Sun has clearly never been to Toronto.
  • The Onion: "Franz Ferdinand Frontman Shot By Gavrilo Princip Bassist." Genius!

  • Wednesday, March 22, 2006

i'm too old for rock shows

  • So I survived the Arctic Monkeys show last night in spite of the rambunctious children and dickhead security. I thought the musical performance was pretty tight and the songs sounded brilliant but their stage presence still sucks. And while I really enjoyed it, my date did not... I'd give it a B+. (Here's the Toronto Sun's review.)
  • Morrissey apologizes to Arctic Monkeys.
  • Torr has a new Morissey b-side, "Good Looking Man About Town" from the "You Have Killed Me" single.
  • Pete Doherty allegedly offered a journalist from Rolling Stone heroin. At least he's generous.
  • Pitchfork has Amy Millan (Stars/BSS) solo album details.
  • Thanks to Script Girl for this link to stupid haircuts on MySpace. Those emo kids sure do do love their asymmetrical hairstyles.
  • If I get a Lollapalooza ticket would anyone in Chicago be willing to let me crash at their place?
  • Thanks to MikeD for telling me about the '24 Hour Party People' Hacienda Tour coming to Toronto next week. I wanna go. Who's coming with me?

  • Tuesday, March 21, 2006

    love and monkeys

  • How was the Arctic Monkeys/Oasis show last night? What did everyone think?
  • Here's the Toronto Sun and Toronto Star reviews of last night's show for those poor unfortunate fools like myself who missed it.
  • Before the show Noel Gallagher compared Arctic Monkeys to Oasis. Very kind. Although I must admit I lean more towards Morrissey's perspective: "It's happening all too quickly for them. They haven't proved a thing and they haven't had to work very hard - that must make them insecure. It's all a bit unnatural"... But maybe I'm just turned off because they've been such dicks in interviews lately?
  • So yeah, I'll be at the Arctic Monkeys show at the Phoenix tonight. Come say hi. And if you don't get into the sold-out Monkeys show then I suggest you go check out Annie's gig at The Mod Club.
  • David Bowie has collaborated with TV On The Radio.
  • Pete Doherty played an impromptu private gig for Mike Tyson in Manchester yesterday.
  • Maggot from GLC explains to the Mirror why they were dropped by their label. "They got sick of us smoking weed around the office and taking drinks from the fridge!"
  • Radiohead are playing a handful of UK/European tour dates in May... before the band head off on an American and Canadian tour in June!!!
  • The Strokes have added some more Canadian tour dates.
  • Torr has a link to the new Snow Patrol video for "You're All I Have".
  • MTV Live hits the Canadian airwaves today.
  • Right, that's it. I gotta get down to to work. See ya tonight.

    death to sxsw

  • SXSW is over! Yay! Now I don't have to feel so left out! Welcome back to all the lucky fuckers who were down there!
  • Pitchfork has a SXSW Diary, Parts One, Two and Three.
  • Andrew Kendall has a teaser gallary from the festival! So pretty.
  • BBC has audio and visuals from SXSW.
  • The Cribs resident troublemaker celebrated SXSW by being violently sick onstage.
  • Beastie Boys made a suprise appearance at the festival.
  • Arctic Monkeys played a killer SXSW set. The boys are opening for Oasis tonight at the ACC in Toronto and I'm catching them tomorrow night at their headlining show at the Phoenix.
  • Douglas Coupland interviews Morrissey.
  • Roddy Woomble of Idlewild (who I adore) is working on a solo album!
  • Roxy Music are also back and working on a new album! How sweet is that?
  • Is anyone going to this Career Concepts thing on Friday?
  • I know I'm supposed to be, like, turned on by this but EW!
  • Oh seal loving Americans... You mean well... but we still own you!
  • Friday, March 17, 2006

here's to a wet night and a dry morning

  • Lollapalooza line-up revealed. (Let's go to this one babe!)
  • The Smiths turned down a $5M reunion performance at Coachella. I can see why Morrissey wouldn't do it but I bet the other guys would have loved to take the money.
  • Bez (Happy Mondays) helped set a world record for maracas shaking on Wednesday as part of XFM Manchester's launch.
  • Dirty Pretty Things gig at SXSW was stopped by police.
  • James Dean Bradfield and Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers are working on solo albums. I used to WORSHIP the Manics in their 'The Holy Bible' era.
  • Rumours that Kate and Pete are still together persist.
  • The Kooks were played on The O.C. last night! They're just about the only band I like these days!
  • It's British Invasion Week on The Edge if, like me, you can't get enough of the Ongoing History of New Music Archives "What Happened to Britpop?".
  • I saw these cute cheap clothes yesterday at the grocery store. Yes, I am so broke that clothes sold at a fucking grocery store excited me.
  • HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY! Can anyone recommend a good place to hit up and get festive in Toronto tonight? Oh and remember that if you start seeing leprechauns you might want to lay off the green beer.
  • Thursday, March 16, 2006

i remember when i lost my mind

  • This drug trial drama in the UK is the scariest sounding thing ever... Then again, it is The Sun... But still...
  • First of all, the most important music news... There will not be a Spice Girls reunion. Not gonna lie, I'm a little disappointed.
  • Rivers Cuomo (weezer) is engaged to marry. He met his fiancee Kyoko Ito when she attended one of his solo gigs.
  • Fran Healy (Travis) and his lovely fiancee Nora Kryst had a baby boy last Friday. Adorable. Cue "Flowers In The Window".
  • Pitchfork warns Art Brut are coming! I can't wait!
  • "Why every guy in N.Y. wants to look like rocker Doherty." (Thanks for the link Ian!)
  • The Simple Life: Season 4 preview. Nicole looks fucking terrible.
  • This has to be illegal? Right?
  • This is easily the most tasteless tattoo ever. NSFW.
  • Wednesday, March 15, 2006

    where's all the music news?

  • Someone is really sick of hearing about the Arctic Monkeys.
  • Shirley Manson (Garbage) has started work on her debut solo album.
  • Courtney Love's back in the studio too.
  • Take Your Medicine posted some sweet free MP3's a few days ago - good if you want to make sure you're keeping current.
  • I almost forgot this past week's issue of NOW had it's fifth annual Toronto Bar Guide.
  • Comedian Ricky Gervais will receive the honorary Rose D'Or Award this year.
  • Celebrity News: Jack Black eloped with his pregnant girlfriend. Oh and contrary to reports, Will Ferrell is not dead!
  • OK, I don't expect anyone but me to care about this but... The Sun claimes that almost all of the conventionally good-looking people on the cast of Coronation Street are leaving the show. I wasn't too upset with this because I watch it for the uglies anyway (I'd miss Tracy Barlow's bitchiness though) but thankfully, the producers claim they've renewed their all their contracts! Long live Tracy Barlow!

    last night was exciting

  • Morrissey launched in tour in Tulsa last night. Torr has links to the setlist and a short clip of "Girlfriend in a Coma".
  • The Genies went down last night and C.R.A.Z.Y. was the big winner. I just wish they'd shown more than one hour of highlights on TV.
  • There was Blondie drama at their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame last night. Black Sabbath, Miles Davis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Sex Pistols were also inducted at the ceremony.
  • OK Go singer Damian Kulash was arrested and charged with "resisting arrest" last night. Too funny.
  • It seems The Sun also noticed Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner's SNL makeover.

  • Monday, March 13, 2006

    busted!

  • From yesterday's Toronto Sun. Too funny.
  • The Four Stages Of The Arctic Monkeys. And if you, like me, missed Arctic Monkeys performances on SNL this weekend, fear not, for now we have YouTube. Check out "I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor" and "A Certain Romance". As a sidenote, Alex's hair looks fantastic!

  • Bobby Gillespie talks to NME.com about the new Primal Scream album.

  • The Earlyfish has a Built To Spill contest! For Canadians only for a change!
  • Kate Moss goes out for a drive "topless" in a fur coat.
  • Paris Hilton gets a consultation for a tummy tuck. What is there to even tuck?
  • The reincarnate of Buddha is lost on the jungles of Nepal. Maybe he went off in search of some entertainment or food after doing nothing but meditating and not having anything to eat or drink in 10 months.
  • Speaking of food... My family is coming over soon to rescue me and plot my escape from the crazy roommate over lunch at the Mandarin so I best be off! Have a good one kids!
  • Friday, March 10, 2006

  • Monday, March 06, 2006

    i dont sympathize with pimps

  • In case you've been under a rock, here's a list of the winners at the Oscars last night. I should also note that I still don't understand how or why 'Hard Out Here for a Pimp' could win an Oscar for best song (although the other nominations in that category were equally bad)... Or why Charlize Theron wore such an oversized bow... I am baffled... Oh and I thought Jon Stewart did a good job hosting but I was kinda disappointed he wasn't more edgy and daring.

  • Arcade Fire, Bedouin Soundclash and Death From Above 1979 were winners at the Indies last night (kicking off Canadian Music Week).

  • Wednesday, March 01, 2006

  • Pete Doherty's out of jail today on bail. Interesting to note that at the time of his arrest he had £8,000 in cash in his jacket pocket.

  • The Stills are back and heading out on tour. How nice of them to play St. Catharines!
